De ascendencia y vinculación donostiarra, Rafa Satrústegui muestra por primera vez en 22 años su obra en una exposición individual en San Sebastián. La última fue en 2004 en Galería Dieciséis bajo la dirección de Gonzalo Sánchez fallecido en 2007.
Con su habitual delicadeza y lirismo, el artista regresa a Donostia con una serie de pinturas y papeles en los que trata de expresar con los mínimos recursos y registros la potencia y versatilidad del gesto explorando la frontera de este con el signo. Para ello silencia todos los colores excepto el azul de Prusia, pigmento protagonista, casi en exclusiva de esta exposición titulada Sugerencias prusianas.
Satrústegui estudia el gesto como registro expresivo del lenguaje pictórico, en especial su conversión o no en signo. Así, en su obra conviven la aspiración de lo gestual como un fin en sí mismo con su posibilidad narrativa.
Los detonantes de sus cuadros son tanto gestos liberados de cualquier función mimética como imágenes, a veces reales, otras imaginadas, que propulsan su obra a un proceso especulativo de elección y sugestión donde el resultado de la batalla entre presentación y representación es siempre impredecible.
Considera por tanto que abstracción y figuración no son paradigmas excluyentes sino distintos estadios y gradientes intermedios como estrategias que vertebran una misma ambición: la voluntad de enriquecer, manipular o dotar de contenido a la realidad.
En definitiva, contraviniendo la famosa máxima del arquitecto Louis Sullivan “La forma sigue a la función”, Satrústegui en su universo pictórico apuesta exactamente por lo contrario: “La función (representativa) sigue a la forma”.
Rafa Satrústegui, de origen guipuzcoano, es un pintor cuya obra se caracteriza por una profunda exploración formalista y una constante búsqueda de depuración estilística. Becado por la Diputación de Guipúzcoa en 1983 y licenciado en Bellas Artes en 1984, complementó su formación en los Talleres de Arte Actual del Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid con Darío Villalba y en Arteleku, taller de litografía con Don Herbert en 1996.
Desde sus primeras exposiciones, Galería Alga de San Sebastián, 1982; Arteder, 1983, Satrústegui ha mostrado una inclinación hacia la pintura como un fin en sí mismo desvinculada de narrativas o discursos temáticos. Esta perspectiva le permite abordar cualquier motivo que le resulte estimulante transformándolo a través de su lenguaje pictórico.
La obra de Satrústegui ha evolucionado hacia una simplificación y esencialidad, influenciada por la estética oriental y el taoísmo así como por una mirada pop presente a lo largo de su trayectoria. El artista valora la forma sobre el fondo buscando evitar que su pintura caiga en lo meramente ornamental. Su atracción por la brevedad y la esencialidad también se refleja en su interés expresivo.
A lo largo de su trayectoria, Rafa Satrústegui ha participado en numerosas exposiciones colectivas e individuales, así como en ferias internacionales como Arco, Art Cologne, Art Basel y Art Chicago. Su obra forma parte de colecciones en instituciones como el Museo de Bellas Artes de Álava, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Extremadura, Fundación Telefónica y Colección Banco de España, entre otras.

Artista Donostiara itzuli da pintura eta paper gaineko lan sorta batekin, non baliabide eta teknika gutxienekin keinuaren indarra eta moldakortasuna adierazten saiatzen den, zeinuarekiko duen muga aztertuz. Horretarako, kolore guztiak isilarazten ditu Prusiako urdina izan ezik, pigmentu protagonista, ia esklusiboki agertzen dena Prusiako Iradokizunak izeneko erakusketa honetan.
Bere margolanen abiarazleak funtzio mimetiko orotik askatzen diren keinuak eta irudiak dira, batzuetan errealak, batzuetan irudikatuak, bere lana aukera eta iradokizun prozesu espekulatibo batera bultzatzen dutenak, non aurkezpenaren eta irudikapenaren arteko borrokaren emaitza beti aurreikus ezina den.
Horregatik, abstrakzioa eta figurazioa ez ditu paradigma baztertzaile gisa hartzen, baizik eta etapa eta tarteko mailaketa gisa, anbizio bakarra egituratzen duten estrategiak: errealitatea aberasteko, manipulatzeko edo edukiz betetzeko nahia.
Rafa Satrústeguiren lana esplorazio formal sakon batek eta fintze estilistikorako etengabeko bilaketak bereizten dute. Bere lehenengo erakusketetatik, pintura helburu gisa hartu izan du, narrazioetatik edo diskurtso tematikoetatik urrunduta. Ikuspegi honek aukera ematen dio estimulatzailetzat jotzen duen edozein gairi heltzeko, bere hizkuntza piktorikoan eraldatuz.
1983an Gipuzkoako Aldundiak beka bat eman zion eta 1984an Arte Ederretan lizentziatu zen, eta Satrústeguik bere prestakuntza osatu zuen Madrilgo Arte Ederren Zirkuluko Arte Garaikideko Tailerretan Darío Villalbarekin eta 1996an Don Herbertekin egindako Arteleku litografia tailerrean. Bere ibilbidean zehar, hainbat erakusketa kolektibo eta bakarkakotan parte hartu du, baita nazioarteko arte azoketan ere, hala nola Arco, Art Cologne, Art Basel eta Art Chicago. Bere lanak Arabako Arte Ederren Museoan, Extremadurako Arte Garaikideko Museoan, Fundazio Telefonikoan eta Espainiako Bankuko Kolekzioan aurkitzen dira, beste hainbaten artean.
Of San Sebastián descent and with strong ties to the city, Rafa Satrústegui presents his work for the first time in 22 years in a solo exhibition in San Sebastián. The artist returns to Donostia with a series of paintings and works on paper in which he attempts to express, with minimal resources and techniques, the power and versatility of gesture, exploring its boundary with the sign. To this end, he silences all colors except Prussian blue, the protagonist pigment, almost exclusively featured in this exhibition entitled Prussian Suggestions.
The triggers for his paintings are both gestures freed from any mimetic function and images, sometimes real, sometimes imagined, that propel his work into a speculative process of choice and suggestion where the outcome of the battle between presentation and representation is always unpredictable.
He therefore considers abstraction and figuration not as mutually exclusive paradigms but as different stages and intermediate gradations, strategies that structure a single ambition: the will to enrich, manipulate, or imbue reality with content.
Rafa Satrústegui’s work is characterized by a profound formal exploration and a constant pursuit of stylistic refinement. From his earliest exhibitions, he has shown an inclination towards painting as an end in itself, detached from narratives or thematic discourses. This perspective allows him to approach any subject that he finds stimulating, transforming it through his pictorial language.
Awarded a grant by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa in 1983 and graduating with a degree in Fine Arts in 1984, Satrústegui complemented his training at the Contemporary Art Workshops of the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid with Darío Villalba and at Arteleku, a lithography workshop with Don Herbert in 1996. Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions, as well as international art fairs such as ARCO, Art Cologne, Art Basel, and Art Chicago. His work is part of collections in institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts of Álava, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Extremadura, the Telefónica Foundation and the Bank of Spain Collection, among others.
